Nigeria brand and category planning

Nigeria Personal Care Sourcing: Build the Range Around Landed Cost and Repeat Sales

A competitive imported personal-care brand needs more than a low factory quotation. UniBeauty starts with the buyer’s brand plan, product categories, target quantities, quality expectations and sales channel, then connects procurement, logistics, inventory and consumer-facing support.

Short answer

Plan the range so quality, order quantity and total import cost work together.

For a Nigeria-focused brand, the goal is not simply to order the cheapest item. The product mix and quantities should support consistent quality and workable production pricing. Procurement price must then be combined with freight, import, clearance and local delivery costs to estimate landed cost. Only after that calculation can the buyer judge whether the product can compete in its intended channel.

Commercial model

Six connected decisions shape the market result.

01 Brand plan

Start from the buyer’s market

Review the target customer, channel, price position, product promise and launch sequence before recommending categories or specifications.

02 Category plan

Build a sellable assortment

Use several long-life core SKUs for continuity and a smaller number of new or campaign-led products for testing and attention.

03 Order architecture

Balance quality and quantity

Use the required specifications, expected quantity by SKU and planned container share to recommend a combination that supports workable production, quality control and a competitive procurement price.

04 Landed cost

Price the import, not only the factory

Add customization, packaging, inspection, freight, insurance, duties, clearance, port costs and local delivery before setting the commercial target.

05 Sell-through support

Prepare the C-end story

Where agreed, organize product images, promotional materials, video assets and product selling points to support the buyer’s local brand presentation.

06 Reorder plan

Protect availability

Use shelf life, lead time, sales velocity and safety stock to plan replenishment rather than waiting for the core product to sell out.

Quantity-led recommendation

Product recommendations are built from the buyer's parameters and expected volume.

UniBeauty does not treat every inquiry as a request for the same fixed catalogue. The practical options depend on what the buyer wants to sell, how each product should be configured, how much of each SKU is expected and whether the order uses ready stock, customized outer packaging or fully printed private-label packaging.

Confirm the product parameters

For sanitary pads or pants, inputs can include type, dimensions, absorbency direction, materials, pack count, retail format and quality target. For wipes or other personal-care products, the required format, count, material, formula or functional direction and retail pack should be stated.

Confirm quantity by product and SKU

State whether the plan is one container for one product line or a mixed container, then estimate the cartons, units or percentage of container space for each product, size and pack version. “Five” should be clarified as five units, five cartons or one-fifth of the container before a quotation is prepared.

Match customization to feasible volume

Printed private-label packaging has its own MOQ, setup and production requirements. A small allocation for one item may not support a separate printed pack, while a larger allocation can open more models, specifications and packaging choices. Where volume is below the workable custom threshold, available stock or another first-order route may be recommended.

Return a production-ready proposal

After the inputs are clear, UniBeauty can recommend suitable products, allocate core and supporting SKUs, identify which items can carry custom packaging, estimate container use and compare procurement price, lead time and replenishment practicality. The final quotation is therefore based on the selected parameters and quantities, not only on a product name.

Why this matters: too many low-volume SKUs can make printed packaging, production scheduling and future replenishment difficult. A more focused first-order structure can provide more reliable supply, clearer costing and a stronger base for later range expansion.

Landed-cost logic

A lower procurement price matters only when the full import economics remain competitive.

Larger or better-structured orders can distribute setup and production costs more efficiently, but quantity should still be connected to shelf life, channel capacity, working capital and realistic sell-through.

LANDED COST PER SELLABLE UNIT

(product + customization + packaging + inspection/documentation + freight/insurance + duty/tax + clearance/port + local delivery + financing or expected loss) ÷ sellable units received

Decision rule: do not compare suppliers only on ex-factory unit price. Compare the complete specification, quality basis, sellable pack, total landed cost, expected retail or wholesale price, channel margin and reorder potential.

Sanitary-pad project example

Treat sanitary pads as a repeat-use core category, not a one-time novelty.

For a selected sanitary-pad specification, an indicated shelf life of up to three years may support planned core inventory. The confirmed shelf life must appear on the approved product and pack documentation and remains subject to the final specification, production date, pack integrity and stated storage conditions.

Product architecture

Confirm pad type, length or size, absorbency direction, day/night use, wings, surface and absorbent materials, individual wrap, pieces per retail pack and cartons per shipping case. Each version affects cost, MOQ, container use and market positioning.

Inventory architecture

Separate long-line core SKUs from optional launch or trial packs. Use realistic monthly sell-through, replenishment time and shelf-life margin to set the first order and safety stock.

Quality basis

Agree the controlled specification, sample, pack structure, inspection points, batch identification and report scope before bulk production. Final claims and market requirements require qualified local review.

Cost basis

Compare cost by sellable retail pack and by usage unit, then add carton efficiency and freight. A low product price can be lost if the pack structure creates poor shipping efficiency or the retail configuration does not fit the channel.

Brand support

Give the importer material that can support both trade and consumer sales.

Product and promotional images

Available scope may include clean product images, pack views, feature callouts and campaign-ready promotional layouts. Final deliverables are confirmed per selected product and order.

Video and selling-point assets

Where available or agreed, product demonstrations, short video clips and structured selling points can help the buyer explain the range consistently across social, ecommerce and distributor channels.

Quality and inspection files

Project QC or inspection files may include the buyer’s company details where feasible. The actual manufacturer, inspection or testing party, method, batch, date and result must remain accurately identified; an internal project report is not presented as an independent certificate unless issued as one.

Nigeria local confirmation map

Confirm the product category before samples, claims and packaging are locked.

Different products in the same brand portfolio may follow different Nigerian routes. Cosmetics and sanitary pads should not be placed into one assumed registration category simply because both are sold through personal-care channels.

Sanitary-pad classification and standard

NAFDAC’s public Greenbook groups listed sanitary-pad products under medical devices. The Standards Organisation of Nigeria library lists NIS 291:2018 — Standard for Sanitary Pad. The Nigerian applicant or qualified local adviser should confirm the current classification, applicable standard, registration route, label inputs and evidence required for the exact product before the specification is finalized.

Cosmetics use a separate route

NAFDAC publishes separate guidance for registration of imported cosmetics. Makeup, skincare and sanitary pads should therefore be mapped product by product, with the local applicant confirming the current submission route and documentation rather than applying one category’s checklist to the whole brand.

Importer and local adviser inputs

The Nigerian side should confirm the legal applicant or importer, current product classification, registration or permit work, local label review, applicable standards, HS classification, customs procedure and any market-specific claim restrictions.

UniBeauty and logistics inputs

UniBeauty can coordinate the agreed product and pack specification, manufacturer information, samples, artwork inputs and available project QC or inspection files. The freight or customs partner should supply current freight, insurance, clearance, port and local-delivery inputs for the landed-cost calculation.

Cost-control checkpoint: use the current Nigeria Customs tariff and trade systems to confirm HS classification, regulated-product controls and applicable duties or levies. Recalculate at quotation and again before shipment because classification, official rates, exchange inputs and logistics charges can change.

Project sequence

Move from brand plan to landed-cost decision.

Share the brand and channel plan

Define target customer, regions, retail or wholesale channel, price position and launch date.

Choose core and test SKUs

Build a repeat-purchase base, then add a limited number of market-test products or pack versions.

Approve specification and samples

Confirm product, materials, pack count, retail pack, claims direction, branding and controlled samples.

Structure quantities for production

Balance product quality, MOQ, setup allocation, unit procurement price, shelf life and realistic sales capacity.

Build the landed-cost model

Use confirmed pack and shipping data, delivery term and the buyer’s current import-cost inputs.

Prepare launch and documentation files

Coordinate agreed marketing assets, project documents and accurate quality or inspection records while the buyer completes local regulatory and import review.
